Autonomous Weapons Systems and the Contextual Nature of Hors de Combat Status
Journal: Information
Authors: Steven Umbrello and Nathan Gabriel Wood
DOI: doi.org/10.3390/info12050216
Autonomous weapons systems (AWS), sometimes referred to as “killer robots”, are receiving ever more attention, both in public discourse as well as by scholars and policymakers. Much of this interest is connected to emerging ethical and legal problems linked to increasing autonomy in weapons systems, but there is a general underappreciation for the ways in which existing law might impact on these new technologies. In this paper, we argue that as AWS become more sophisticated and increasingly more capable than flesh-and-blood soldiers, it will increasingly be the case that such soldiers are ...

Mapping Value Sensitive Design onto AI for Social Good Principles
Просмотров 9613 года назад
Value Sensitive Design (VSD) is an established method for integrating values in technical design. It has been applied to different technologies and recently also to artificial intelligence (AI). We argue that AI poses a number of specific challenges to VSD that require a somewhat adapted VSD approach. In particular, machine learning (ML) poses two challenges to VSD. First, it may opaque (to hum...
Designing AI Towards Sustainable Development Goals: A Value Sensitive Design Approach
Просмотров 4813 года назад
A presentation given at fPET 2020 - Forum on Philosophy, Engineering, and Technology Although not much work has been done regarding the practical implementations of AI4SG principles for design, initial first steps provide promising ways forward. This presentation proposes that the Value Sensitive Design (VSD) approach to technology design maps symbiotically onto the initially formulated AI4SG p...

I've here with the same question as the other guy but there's no answer. You haven't shown or told us nearly enough about this.

Looks so beautiful! Thinking on buying this edition.
This book is special to me because my Dad bought it for me and it's one of his favorite stories
I got a copy of this very book for 50p UK from my local charity shop. One of my best charity book finds so far.
Fagles is the best
2024 Hii creator
Gorgeous thx for sharing
Beautiful thx for sharing
This is like at least 10 to 50 thousand dollars worth of books!! I’m so jealous. I can’t even watch this whole video without wanting to go out and buy all those books
This is my dream library
nerd
Beautiful work!
I simply cannot take my eyes away! Marvelous, congratulations. Thank you so very much for your tour. You are justifiably proud! You may be preserving western culture for future generations! May the Lord, God Almighty bless you and all you do.
You have a beautiful collection.
the box is ceder?
The intro to ur video made me laugh. All class my man.
Please review Sherlock Holmes Complete Collection, The Heirloom Collection 2012. And if you will compare the font sizes between The Heirloom and B&N Leatherbound, which is better?
My issue with going for editions is within translation. If one book is beautiful but of an unwanted translation I can’t find a reason to buy it. So I go by translation and then format and what I’ll end up with may not be completely uniform but I’m learning that I love the more interesting look of diversity rather than have expensive books I don’t want to read/reread ever again. 🤷🏼♀️
Tolkien and Dostoevsky on the same shelf👍
Franklin sold leather and "replica" leather like covers. They are or were nearly 75% less the price of the "leather."
This really looks like a beautiful edition. One thing I wish classics book reviews (including you) would include when the book is not written originally in English, is a note about the translator and a sample of the text. As much as I love the look and fell of this edition, I went with the Everyman’s Library after researching translators a little. The translator for this Easton Press version is Melville Best Anderson (MBA). Since Easton Press’ website didn’t mention who the translator for their edition is, I had to find this from a Google search, which led me to Abe Books. C’mon, there are a hundred translations of this work. At the end of the day, while I do want a nice looking edition, I want to enjoy the reading experience even more. I found a sample of MBA’s translation and found it to be archaic in feel, like I had to deal with the older English, as well as the second language issue. I ended up ordering an Everyman’s Library edition, translated by Allen Mandelbaum. I felt like his verse didn’t try to artificially rhyme, which allowed him to keep closer to the meaning of the original. Anyway, I might order the Eastman Press edition, just to page through, as I’m reading from the Everyman’s Press edition!
I've just been offered this for 30 pounds British 😮
Definitely buying this!!
What do you think about “The Emperors Handbook?”
What brand of wax do you use?
I wonder what is a fair price for a set of these in 2023? 🤔
Only questions no answers. Thanks.
Last night in the Loeb Classical Library book on Pliny's " Natural History ' I read a touching description of VERY friendly sea dolphins : " The dolphin is a animal that is not only friendly to mankind but also a lover of music ... " A dolphin that had been brought into Lucerne Lake fell marvellously in love with a certain boy ... A similar story is told about a boy in the city pf Iasus , with whom a dolphin was observed for a long time to be in love and while eagerly following him to the shore when he was going away it grounded on the sand and expired Alexander the Great made the boy head of the priesthood of Poseidon at Babylon, interpreting the the dolphin's affection as a sign of the deity's favor.. In the region of Nismes in the Province of Narbonne there is a marsh named Latera where dolphins catch fish in partnership with human fishermen. " [ Book IX viii 27-ix. 30 ]
Seeing that the Easton Press version of meditations is out of print I was going to buy this set. I'm glad I checked here first. Why in God's name would they put a small paperback sized printing in this hardcover sized book and leave all of that empty space. I'll wait for meditations to come back in stock even if it's years.
This is so freaking awesome!!!! Amazing collection and thank you for sharing it with us. Please keep updating us on this collection over time 🍾🥂👌
In late toddlerhood, close to starting school at 4, a woman came to the house to sell a Compton’s Encyclopedia. With it came a set of American and British classics, nicely bound as shown here but not printed on top quality paper. In jr high I read them all one summer, around the 8th or ninth grade. I still look back fondly at having done so. That was over 60 yrs ago.
Looks like you gave everything up your RUclips channels dead your websites no longer up and running what what happened
I wish I could get these .... I haven't wanted set of books this badly in a long time.
It upsets me endlessly that easton press does not ship outside of the US / UK (I'm not even sure about the UK tbh). I am such a big fan of leather bound books and easton press ones make me want to empty my bank account. But nope, can't even order one for insane prices. Unless I buy of ebay etc and I'm not willing to risk ebay esp not with the shipping etc. I have too many bad experiences ordering books from Amazon let alone from a random ebay seller (although.. I imagine even a random ebay seller will do better than throw a bunch of rather expensive books into a big box with zero protection)
goth ? damn
Red for The hobbit and green for the LOTR is weird, and not the good kind
I must say of the two I much prefer Robert Fagles prose bearing in mind that Homer sung the Odyssey, like so many great epics, this story wasn’t committed to writing until centuries after Homer’s death, much like the Norse Eddas and the Hindu Vedas. By putting them in verse it made the task of the bards much easer for memorising , like many of us remember lyrics of modern song
Lindo 👍
Nice to see them pay attention to the cover as well with this release.
Have you actually read all of these books? Just asking …
I covet. But I suppose I will stick with nice hardbacks like the Everyman Library, etc. Maybe one day I will pick a particular favorite and spring for it.
Both of these are fairly modern translations.
Hmm, mine is identical except it's red...
Really good information, thank you. I personally cannot stand modern/contemporary language and translations in classic literature, so I think I'll continue to primarily buy from Easton.
Kolekcja przepiękna wydania dzieł niesamowite coś pięknego i wspaniałego niewyobrażalna uczta dla ducha i oczu Pozdrawiam z Polski
I imagine if they used newer copywritten translations with original typeset then they would probably be more expensive than they already are. Btw way, I loved the “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desire” music!
If anyone has one for sale let me know
Hello Steven. New subscriber here. I came across your channel today, and am so glad I did. I am looking for a family Bible and wanted to ask your recommendations for the top 3-6 luxury Bibles regardless of the price. I want to get two Bibles. One for the library with art and illustration and as big as possible. Another one for studying but, hopefully, with illustrations, maps and other features for someone who is very visual. I am interested in the Cambridge Family Chronicle and wasn’t sure if there are other similar options from other publishers. I prefer heavier paper of 35-55 gsm. I’d also like a Bible with lots of illustrations or art illustrations/paintings in color or in black and white. 12 font or above. I was considering the Easton Press Rembrandt family Bible, as well as their Catholic Bible with has 1800+ pages and 250+ of illustrations. I don’t know if you recommend EP. It seems like there should be a Bible that is also an art book. One that has examples of Western Christian art but maybe that’s not available because of differences among Christian denominations. I am not sure. Art for me is not an idol and helps me with my faith. I am also looking for a high quality study Bible with 10 font or above. Something that has the extensive options that Thomas Nelson has in his NLT large study Bible, except with more luxury features in terms of paper, sewn binding, spine... I don’t even know where to begin. Maybe one that’s not made in China, even though the ones I have seen from TN are actually well-made. I am from Europe and we like to buy heirloom pieces for such important items, and what could be more important than the Bible. I have to say that $50-80 can get anyone some of the highest quality Bibles and it really isn’t necessary or maybe even logical to spend more, but I could afford it since I don’t want to update my iPhone, iPad and TV for the next couple of year. Anything you recommend would be very helpful and I appreciate it. Of course, anyone else in the comment section. If you have recommendations, please let me know. I have to say that I am a recent convert to Christianity. It took me 20 years of studying and debating… it was exhausting but my experience and the 900 pages of notes I have written will be shared with others and useful maybe one day as a published book. I am, obviously, not expecting anyone to do research for me, and all I wish to know is whether you have definite recommendations for publishing companies or Bible that you might consider high quality ones with illustrations.
Are you still looking for recommendations?
My question is how do you tell the difference between the franklin library prints. I ain't no leather enthusiast lmao
